a large pair of French Empire period chased, gilded bronze six-arm candelabra converted into table lamps. The bases rise from triangular plinths supporting three winged sphinxes with intermediate garlands; this tier surmounted by three distinct, finely cast low relief panels depicting winged cherubs bearing a shield, a helmet, and a glaive (a type of sword) that was unique to L'Ecole de Mars*. The top tier of the bases terminates in a pulvinated acanthus frieze bracketed by lions' heads. Continuing from the base, acanthus leaves support tapered, fluted columns with finely cast collars of classical military motifs and acanthus. The capitals, of coupe form, bear six cornucopia branches supporting drip-pans and foliate candle nozzles. Later black tole shades. French circa 1800-1815.
