JB Moore Crystal Navajo Rug. JB Moore's Crystal Trading Post can be attributed to many beautiful Navajo weaving designs. When you look through the JB Moore Navajo Weaving catalogs that he published in 1903 and 1911 you can see bits and pieces of several design elements which have been incorporated into this incredible work of art. Created using natural wool colors with some aniline dyes, this weaving was hand carded, hand spun using Native wool. It also features Spider Woman crosses. Being that the Navajo believe to have learned weaving from Spider Woman herself, it’s only fitting she would dominate much of the early weaving work done by the Navajo people. That’s why many early blankets featured a cross representing Spider Woman and her teachings. Though methods on placement vary, it’s widely considered taboo to place this cross within a diamond, square or triangle pattern so as not to “trap” her in the work; thus, you’ll find a deliberate imperfection.
