Removed from a  Mercury Outboard 40hp - Inline 2 cylinder Two 2-Stroke Oil Injected Part #'s Gear Housing Lower Unit Gearcase: 1682-821306T 6 1682-821306 C2 Long Shaft 2.00:1 Gear Ratio Shaft mesures 21 5/8" from Top of impeller housing (Make Sure Yours looks just like this one and drive shaft measures the same.  Also has the same style shift shaft.  There are many variations of this lower unit. Part # will be the same with a different suffix at the end) Ask if unsure!!
