The Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon, more commonly known as the Knights Templar, was a monastic order of vowed knights which was founded in 1119 to protect Christian pilgrims in the region from bandit raids. Having taken vows of poverty and chastity, they enthusiastically set out on their mission with a mere 9 knights. These humble beginnings were reflected on their seal: two impoverished knights sharing a horse. Despite this modest founding, the Knights Templar quickly grew into an elite fighting force that would help shape Europe for for nearly two centuries and inspire wonder in the popular imagination to this day.
