STORY:  These handmade works are created as display pieces for intricate picbil textiles, which are woven by master artisan women in Northeastern Guatemala. Every piece is individually made on a traditional baskstrap loom, then assembled with wood accents and a handmade agave hanging string, in order to reflect the process, skill and tradition of this region. This democratic collective of 63 artisan women create textiles on traditional backstrap looms, along with handwoven maguey bags. Weaving is an important creative process among Q’eqchi’ women, and is a skill that they learn starting around 10 years of age. These mini looms are created as display pieces for their exquisite picbil fabrics – an intricate process that produces a gauzy, almost lace-like material with designs rooted in nature like plants, flowers, deer and birds. Your purchase helps preserve millennial craft traditions, provides economic empowerment to artisans, and contributes to social programs for artisan communities.
