Course description: Over the last 25 years, Jane Austen has transformed from classic British author to international literary icon. Hundreds of retellings of her classic novels have emerged, both in print and in film. This course will focus upon a close reading o a core Jane Austen text -- Pride and Prejudice -- as well as contemporary retellings of it. Students will explore the enduring relevance of Austen’s early 19thcentury novels, the surge in Austen’s popularity from the late 1990s to the present day, and the literary value of various Austen spin offs.
