Viking Runes Stainless steel pendant 24" Genuine Leather Cord 1 1/2" long x 1/4" wide In Nordic lore, runes were symbols that sprang from the Well of Urd – the source of fate. The earliest runes have been found carved in stone in Scandinavia from at least 160 AD. The Vikings thought of runes not just as letters but as having potent virtues within themselves. Because they had inherent meaning, they could be used as a means of communication between the natural and ancestral worlds. Runes were used in Viking religion and carved into weapons to instill them with power and worn by many as a form of luck, faith, meaning and protection.
