Takiyasha and the Skeleton, Hahnemühle Print

Utagawa Kuniyoshi knew a thing or two about ghost stories. In this monstrous scene, he depicts the Princess Takiyasha, trapped by imperial samurai sent to hunt her down. But the young woman has old magic on her side, and from the scroll in her hand she reads the spell to summon a Gashadokuro—a gigantic skeleton assembled from the bodies of the soldiers that followed her doomed father in an unsuccessful revolt against the Japanese emperor.
