The process is the star element in Hussain’s work, which helps him explore themes of distortion, identity and scattered memories. He began working with the idea of a crumpled ball of newspaper that distorts the image and text once unfolded. He took this idea forward by using traditional techniques to paint on a folded, unprimed canvas and unfolding the canvas after painting his subject to reveal a shattered, distorted image.
