On August 16, 1931, at 5:40 am, a magnitude 6.5 earthquake shook Valentine, Texas. Every building not constructed with a wood frame sustained severe damage from the earthquake. Adobes had walls collapse, brick chimneys either toppled or cracked, and the school was beyond repair.
