You don’t have to tell a Texan what’s great about Texas. But one thing I think is just great is the story of their first flag. Lorenzo de Zavala proposed this flag in 1836 at Washington-on-the-Brazos – the convention that drafted the Texas Declaration of Independence from Mexico. But then some delegates wanted to muddy it up with a rainbow and some more stars and whatever else. It never came to be. But Mamie Cox, a hundred years later, found the papers, drew up a design, and called it a day. And I think it looks just right.
