It has a unique smell to it due to its active ingredient Carbolic Acid. To this day it is still used by the Red Cross and Hospitals due to its germicidal properties. Every now and then you can still find the real stuff however most you now see available actually contain no Carbolic Acid (the active ingredient that made it Carbolic Soap).
