  Medusa appears as a winged woman with venomous snakes emerging from her head. Even a glance at her face turns the onlooker into stone. She was defeated by the hero Perseus only after he had been equipped with a mirrored shield, winged sandals, sword and helm of invisibility provided by the gods.
