This interesting book was developed at a high school in the United States, with a focus on critical thinking and communication skills. The concept of the book is for readers to explore and discuss Japanese and global issues from a cultural perspective as part of a team of learners, accomplishing tasks with the support of others and reaching goals together. The book is very interactive and encourages readers to express their ideas in Japanese about a wide range of subjects with current social issues and universal human values at the core. There are 6 main units, each with 2 sub-lessons. The first unit is focused on technology and our lives, including talking points about the negative effects of smartphones. The second unit is about evolving design, and it features Japanese products and design, as well as the elements of what is considered “good design”. Unit 3 is about art and how to enjoy Japanese art, as well as understand the cultural significance of various different art forms. Unit 4 talks about immigration issues, and the relationship between Japan and the US. Unit 5 is about multi-cultural society and mixed-race experiences in Japan. The final unit focuses on building a better future, and it includes some information and discussion activities based on the SDGs and students’ own hopes.   All the activity instructions and questions are in English, which means you can focus on answering the question in Japanese with your classmates or study partners, without having to worry about comprehension issues, or understanding exactly what you need to do. This helps the overall enjoyment aspect of learning together with this book. Although it is possible to use this book for self-study, because of the heavy discussion component, it is best suited for use in classroom situations, or at the very least, with a study partner.
