Aster azureus - Sky Blue Aster

Aster species in general are essential fall pollinator plants and should be included in native garden designs large or small. Sky Blue Aster (Aster azureus) can grow in a variety of soil conditions and full sun to partial shade. This native species typically reaches heights of 1 to 4 feet and has light blue to violet flowers. It is most commonly found in mesic to dry soils in prairies, savannahs and rocky upland woods. The flowers attract a wide variety of insects including bees, and other pollinators which seek its pollen and nectar. It is particularly attractive to Monarch butterflies during their migration.  Its fibrous root system holds soil in place and helps control erosion.
