Elymus virginicus - Virginia Wild Rye
Virginia Wild Rye is a native, perennial bunchgrass. It is similar to Nodding Wild Rye (Elymus canadensis) in appearance, but is typically shorter in height with shorter awns on the seed head. The seed heads are more erect than those of Nodding Wild Rye which typically bow or droop. It reaches approximately three feet in height, lacks rhizomes and reproduces by seed and tillers. How To Plant Virginia Wild Rye Seeds: Direct sow seeds into prepared soil in late fall once soil temps are below 50 degrees (usually mid to late November).
