Purple Top prefers partial shade and drier soils. It is the larval host for the Cross-line skipper, Broad-winged skipper, Little Glassywing skipper and the Large Wood Nymph. The "Purple Top" reaches its peak in late summer to early fall and turns brown later in the season. This perennial reaches heights anywhere from 3 to 6 feet. How To Plant Purple Top Seeds: Direct sow seeds into prepared soil in late fall once soil temps are below 50 degrees (usually mid to late November). Can also be planted in winter during natural freeze/thaw cycles and early spring. Plant shallow, no deeper than 1/8 to 1/4 inch deep and lightly rake to work seed in. Plant in full sun to partial shade.
