Similar to tatami in Japan, petate mats in Mexico play an essential role in designating living spaces. The ancient craft involves the harvesting of tule or palm plants and the skilled weaving of their fibers into versatile textiles that become surfaces for rest, eating, working & living.  Our handwoven mat is made with a double-thickness weave, making it specially durable for outdoor living. The small size is recommended for entryways, while the larger size makes an inviting surface atop decks, grass, gravel, and poolside patios. Garden materials that are made from earth will return to earth at the end of their life.  Made in Mexico from 100% bulrush, an aquatic plant harvested from lakesides of the Toluca Valley.
