The Isi-agu (ee-see-ah-guh) pattern is a cultural Igbo (Ibo) art form that depicts the lion's head. It is traditionally reserved for the apparel of elders, chieftains, titled men and their wives. In contemporary Igbo culture, the pattern is used to make clothes for special occasions like weddings. Fun fact: Although the isi-agu pattern shows a lion head, it is not called isi-odum after Odum (aw-doom) the lion. The name Isi-agu means leopard head, probably because of some dialectical slip at the time it was named. The name isi-agu has become the general name for this type of cloth. In recent times, other animals and cultural symbols have been used as pattern also. It is common to hear people ask about "the isi-agu cloth with elephant head". Share this rich cultural experience with us...the Oseli isiagu experience! Designed in the USA, this handmade tie dye pattern is made with earthy colors on a shade of terracotta.
