Common or Comet goldfish (Carassius auratus) are a member of the goldfish family. They have orange scales with a long, slender body and a straight tail fin. They range in size from 1.5" to as large as 12". Common goldfish are primarily solid orange or red in color but can have other color variations including solid black or white, as well as orange and black or white and red also known as sarasa goldfish. All goldfish are spawned in the spring and hatched from an egg. They are smaller than an eyelash in size and a muted brown color for the first few weeks of their life. Around 60-90 days they will grow to a marketable size of 1.5" - 2.5" but will need additional time for their color to develop. Goldfish growth rates are based on food, space, water quality and surrounding environment. Goldfish are omnivores and will eat all types of dried and live food, but basic fish flakes or pellet food will provide the proper diet. Common goldfish have a multitude of purposes.
