Astragalus has a long and rich history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) as well as in broader Asian culture. Native to China, Mongolia, and North Korea, astragalus was first mentioned in the Divine Husbandman's Classic, an ancient herbal healing text written thousands of years ago. The herb is known as Huang Qi in Chinese and is considered one of 50 fundamental herbs in TCM.  Astragalus mongholicus is an herbaceous, low-growing perennial, and member of the pea family. Also referred to as milkvetch in English, the flowering plant thrives in grassy regions and on mountainsides, requiring plenty of sun exposure. When grown for cultivation, the plants are typically harvested after four or five years, with the roots collected in spring or fall. The roots are then dried in the sun and sliced for distribution.
