This Japanese fabric was definitely influenced by the woodblock print by the artist, Hokusai. His well known print called the 神奈川沖浪裏 (Kangawa-oki nami ura) Great Wave off Kanagawa is shown worldwide from museums at the Met in NYC to museums in Britain, Melbourne & Giverny, France to name just a few. The original print was published in the early 1800's, introducing a sail boat at the mercy of a huge wave or tsunami. The Great Wave print is so popular, the original woodblocks printed over 5000 copies. Raised in Hawaii, we understand there's not many as powerful as the deep blue sea.
