A kitchen island is low-key one of the most used and viewed pieces of furniture in the home, so when we designed Kelly's kitchen island we knew it needed to be built like a tank, but look like a Range Rover.  Thirty-some-odd feet of thoughtfully arranged 14-gauge steel later, we had our huckleberry.  The shelves are supported by 2" x 1" tube brackets that are arranged perpendicular to the wide legs, which allows the wooden shelves to be inset on their frames.  These shelves are thus more than sturdy enough to hold heavy iron pots or several jars full of grain and beans.  Hell, you can keep your weight set down there if you'd like.   We left 10" on three sides of the island for enough stool seating for one person on each end and two to three on the open portion.  This piece was generally designed to go against a wall, or you could have the closed portion on the same side of the oven so that no one sits too close to it.  But let us know if you'd like seating on all sides, or none at all.
