A wheat-based cracker similar in texture to a grissini breadstick, taralli can be sweet or savory. Taralli were invented during the late 8th Century by impoverished workers in Puglia who, starving, decided to make something edible out of left-over scraps of dough to sustain them through periods of famine, but through the years they have grown in popularity to become one of the most common snacks in the country.
