The Sumner variety was discovered as a seedling by Walter Sumner around 1932 in Tifton, GA and falls later on the harvest calendar. Not only does the Sumner take its time before being ready for harvest, the trees themselves take longer than most to reach bearing age or maturity. However, the wait is certainly worth it. Similar in size and shell to a Desirable, the Sumner pecan offers a nice crunch and a savory, rich flavor that lingers. It tends to have a medium to large kernel that has a deep, nutty flavor.
