Boxing organizer Tex Rickard formed the Whirlwinds to bring basketball into Madison Square Garden. Their most famous battle took place on April 16 of that year against the original Celtics. They were to play a three game series to determine the champion of the Metropolitan League after a trouncing in the first game the Celtics game back to tie the series. The third game was never played, as rumors of a point-shaving scandal were circulating. Nat Holman and Marty Friedman count as two of the most famous players to don a whirlwinds jersey.
