This is an original 1721 black and white copper engraving of "Anton Perenott, Cardinal Granvella." This is a portrait of Antonius Perenottus, Catholic Cardinal of Granvil, Bishop of Arras, and a member of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V's council. Cardinal Perenottus was present at the Council of Trent, which began the Counter-Reformation. The portrait is framed by a wonderful decorative motif featuring filigreed designs and a stylized skull with wings at the bottom of the print. This piece is accompanied by the original German biographical text printed on two separate sheets featuring a decorative drop cap, beautiful vignette comprised of an ornate frame surrounding two cherubs flanking a female bust within a botanical design, and a botanical tailpiece.
