1721 Copper Engraving Portrait Francesco I D'Este Duke Modena Reggio Italy EUM3
This is an original 1721 black and white copper engraving of "Franciscus Hertzog von Modena." This is a portrait of Francesco I d'Este, Duke of Modena and Reggio from 1629 to 1658. He was the son of Alfonso III d'Este, Duke of Modena and Isabella of Savoy. Francesco I assumed the responsibilities of the reigning Duke following his father's abdication in 1629. The portrait is surrounded by a wonderful decorative motif mimicking a frame set against an etched background. The design features a subtly ornate frame with two sets of drapes resting atop a base with a decorative broach-like oval framed by two additional cherubs draped in a botanical design. This piece is accompanied by the original German biographical text printed on a separate sheet and features a decorative drop cap, an exquisite vignette of three figures seated in a landscape, and tailpiece comprised of an ornate design.
