This is an original 1721 black and white copper engraving of "Joannes Casimirus Pfaltzgraf am Rhein, Hertzog in ober und untern Baÿern." This is a portrait of John Casimir of the Palatinate-Simmern, a German Prince and son of Elector Frederick III, Count of Palatine of the Rhine. He acted as regent for his nephew, Elector Frederick IV, from 1583 to 1592. John Casimir was a staunch Calvinist and led mercenary troops in religious wars, including the Dutch Revolt. The portrait is framed by a wonderful decorative motif featuring a shell and botanical design at the top of the image with columns flanking the portrait.
