1721 Copper Engraving Portrait Pope Clement VIII Roman Catholic Church Long EUM1
This is an original 1721 black and white copper engraving of "Clemens VIII. Pont. Max.," better known as Pope Clement VIII. Born Ippolito Aldobrandini, Clement VIII was Pope from 30 January 1592 to 3 March 1605. During his pontificate, Clement VIII negotiated the Peace of Vervins, resulting in the end to conflict between Spain and France, and a peace between France and Savoy. In 1595, he initiated an alliance of the Christian states of Europe to oppose the Ottoman Empire in what became known as "The Long War." The portrait is surrounded by a wonderful decorative motif mimicking a frame set against an etched background. The design features a subtly ornate frame with two sets of drapes resting atop a base with a decorative broach-like oval framed by two additional cherubs draped in a botanical design.
