This is an original 1872 black and white wood engraving of a sketch by English novelist William Makepeace Thackeray (1811-1863) entitled "The Last Stroke of Fortune." This was a scene from Thackeray's Yellowplush Papers, which were comic sketches about the life and times of early 19th century footman Charles Yellowplush, and unfortunately shows a man about to lay his unmaimed hand on his female companion.
