1875 Chromolithograph Renaissance Illumination Didot Spain Initial Design LOR1
This is a rare original 1875 color chromolithograph that unites two beautifully illuminated Spanish manuscripts from the Renaissance period, which were located in the library of Ambroise Firmin Didot (part of the famous Didot publishing family in France). They were both Charters of Nobility, one for Juan Cataño and the other for Augustin de Yturbe. The larger style of the decorations and initials is interesting in comparison to their finer Italian counterparts, however they provide a valuable glimpse into the Spanish artistry during the Renaissance and how it was influenced by eastern Europe at the time. A unique feature of this illustration, which may be difficult to see in the digital image, is the use of gold ink that not only shimmers when it catches the light but also accentuates some of the finer details which might otherwise be missed.
