1877 Wood Engraving Architecture City Hall Valenciennes France Revolution XEA7
This is an original 1877 black and white wood engraving of the City Hall of Valenciennes, France. Aside from its use as a central administrative center, the City Hall was besieged by the First Coalition against Revolutionary France in 1793. It was later retaken by the revolutionaries in August of 1794. On a side note, some citizens of the town tortured, raped, and guillotined (in that order?), five Ursine nuns during the Reign of Terror. Scary stuff indeed.
