This is an original 1882 black and white wood engraving of Fountains Abbey, near Aldfield, Ripon, North Yorkshire, England. This ancient abbey was erected around 1132, and served as a Cistercian monastery until Henry VIII ordered the Dissolution of Monasteries in 1539. It was then sold to London merchant and father of the founder of the Royal Exchange, Sir Richard Gresham.
