This is an original 1882 black and white wood engraving of England's Liverpool docks, located on Mersey river. It is thought that this was the original Old Dock, also known as Thomas Steer's Dock after the engineer who designed it. It would soon become known as the world's first commercial wet dock, with ships only only to access it through locks at high tide. It was large enough to accommodate around 100 vessels comfortably. Unfortunately, as the Liverpool area developed further, the amount of ships using the port outgrew the dock's capacity, and in 1826 it was filled in.
