An American Myth. This is an original 1894 halftone print showing an outdoor sculpture of a Sphinx. This unfinished work was in the Exposition grounds, east of the Art Palace. The sculptor is Theodore Baur of New York. He titled this piece "The Secret," which can be justified by the little Cupid whispering into the Sphinx's ear. The Sphinx has been used throughout history as an icon and also a myth with a body of a lioness and the head of a women. (Please note that, typical of halftone prints, there is printing on the reverse.) Period Paper has obtained a wonderful set of halftone images of the 1893 Chicago World's Fair, also known as the World Columbian Exposition. This collection of the fair's many architectural, artistic, mechanical, agricultural, industrial, archeological, ethnological, historical, and scenic attractions was published in 1894.
