This is an original 1902 black and white halftone print of "St. James Cathedral, Montreal." This image captures the Roman Catholic Cathedral-Basiclica of Mary, Queen of the World in Montreal, Quebec. Known as "St. James Cathedral" in honor of Saint James the Great, the parish patron, during the early twentieth century, today it is not to be confused with the Protestant church of the same name in Montreal, which is affiliated with the United Church of Cananda. It was rededicated "Mary, Queen of the World," in 1955 by Pope Pius XII. The construction of the Cathedral-Basilica of Mary, Queen of the World was ordered by Ignace Bourget in 1852, following the fire at Saint-Jacques Cathedral. The design is a reduced-scale interpretation of St. Peter's in Rome, with construction beginning in 1875. Upon its completion, it was the largest church in Quebec.
