1903 Print Martinique La Savane Statue French Empress Josephine Caribbean XGJA6
This is an original 1903 black and white halftone print of La Savane, a park in the French-Caribbean island of Martinique. In the center stands the statue of Empress Joséphine, first wife of Napoléon Bonaparte, who was born on the island. Despite being born to a French family on the island, she was not a favored daughter by the locals; this could have been a result of her returning the practice of slavery to Martinique. Today this statue stands amidst the park's scenery and many temporary market shops a little worse for wear without a head and vandalized with red paint representing the statue's beheading.CONDITIONThis 108+ year old Item is rated Near Mint / Very Fine.
