This is an original 1907 black and white halftone print of the traditional ceremony that occurred annually in Venice, Italy, where the Doge (ruler) would wed Venice to the Adriatic Sea in the hope that God would calm the sea's waters and the Venetians' troubled hearts. He performed this ceremony on the Ascension Day after mass in Saint Mark's Basilica. The Doge would ride the famous and elaborately decorated Bucintoro boat (pictured in the background) out to the sea and would be followed by the rest of Venice in their own boats. He would then say a few words and drop a gold ring into the sea to complete the ceremony. CONDITIONThis 104+ year old Item is rated Very Fine +++. Light aging throughout. No creases.
