This is an original 1908 duotone halftone print of the Catacombs of Rome (Catacombe di Roma) which are ancient burial places underneath the city of Rome, Italy. There are at least forty catacombs and they were begun in the 2nd century AD to bury (mostly) Christians. They were also begun due to scarcity of land and overcrowding in Rome.
