This is an original 1910 sepia photogravure of "Chapelle de St. Césaire, Aliscamps." A Victorian-era woman poses under an arch of the Alyscamps in the early twentieth century. Originally a Roman necropolis with tombs lining the road leading up to the city of Arles, France, the Alyscamps has become perhaps the most famous necropolis in the world. As Romans had a social need to be recognized during and after their lives, the streets around Roman cities provided the opportune way to be displayed in the form of busts after their deaths, and to adhere to the strict laws about being buried outside of the city limits. Today, the Alyscamps is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. CONDITIONThis 101+ year old Item is rated Near Mint / Very Fine. Light aging throughout. No creases. No natural defects.
