This is an original 1922 sepia rotogravure of civilians in Petrograd (now St. Petersburg) demolishing a wooden house for firewood in order to survive the Russian winter. The center image shows the citizens sawing the logs for firewood, and the bottom image shows the educated class removing the filth from the backyards of their homes. The caption for the top image writes, "Demolishing wooden houses in Petrograd for fuel in order to help the inhabitants through the hardships of a Russian Winter. Observers have stated that there is not a wooden building still left standing in Petrograd, all having been sacrificed to pressing need.
