This is an original 1929 photogravure of the ascent to the Mokattam (or Moqattam, Muqattam) hills and tomb of Cheikh (Sheikh) Sultan Shah. Mount Mokattam is considered by Egyptians to be the only mountain near Cairo, though it stands only 400 to 500 feet high. Note the hiking path and staircases built into the hillside for easier ascension. The building in the foreground is a grave monument to Sultan Shah. Photograph by Herbert Ricke.
