This is an original 1931 halftone print of Mount Pelée in Martinique. Photography for this gorgeous image was by Captain Alfred Buckham. Buckham started his photography career in 1908 and in 1917, and became a reconnaissance photographer during World War I with the Royal Naval Air Service. Amazingly, Buckham was involved in nine crashes and was never seriously injured. Buckham felt his best shots came while he was standing up-- he is quoted as saying, "if one's right leg is tied to the seat with a scarf or a piece of rope, it is possible to work in perfect security." Buckham originally wanted to become a painter, but after spending a day at the National Gallery and looking at Turner's paintings, he piled his paintings into a heap and set them on fire. He began his photography career after being stimulated by a friend who was a landscape photographer.CONDITIONThis 80+ year old Item is rated Near Mint. Moderate aging in margins. No natural defects.
