This is an original 1938 black and white wood engraving of a church and graveyard on one of the Finnish Islands of Åland. The caption reads "Finströms Kyrka" in Sweedish, which translates to "Finstroms Church". Thornton Oakley (1881-1953) was an American illustrator known for his work with "Century," "Harper's Monthly," and "National Geographic." Oakley collaborated with his wife, Amy, while creating a series of travel books. Amy wrote the text, and Thornton illustrated.
