The Jazz Harmony Book by David Berkman                             This book is about the process of putting chord changes to melodies and the study of how chord progressions work. It's not about soloing over chord changes. It's a book about the different chords that can be used to harmonize melodies.  This book consists of two main sections. The first discusses the key elements that make up the tonal universe. The second part of the book deals with harmonic approaches that aren't, strictly speaking, functional. These approaches help explain some additional harmonic moves of mainstream jazz players. There are two appendices. One for composing and the other for a piano primer.
