Wood “Edwin Dale, Esq. late of the United States Navy”

Wood.  “Edwin Dale, Esq. late of the United States Navy.”  From The Port Folio.  Philadelphia: June1814.  3 3/8 x 2 ¾.  Stipple by David Edwin.  Very good condition.   Dale served as a 1st Lieutenant under John Paul Jones on the Bon Homme Richard.  The Port Folio was a new type of American magazine, “Devoted to Useful Science, the Liberal Arts, Legitimate Criticism, and Polite Literature.”   A product of the new century, it appeared first as a weekly issue in 1801, changing to a monthly magazine in 1809 until its demise at the end of 1827.  The Port Folio contained numerous engraved illustrations, from current events to historical portraits.
