ALICE TAN GONZALES’S STORIES come straight out of the womb of West Visayas, her home. They embody the regional culture—its folklore and history—and are peopled by farmers and fisherfolk of Panay and Negros. Written originally in Hiligaynon, her stories embody the traditional Hiligaynon style of writing—a slow unfolding of narrative in the classic realist mode with an inclination toward the romantic. Nevertheless, they contain dashes of postcolonial protest and gender issue discussions. This self-translation into English is the writer’s bid to share the West Visayan experience outside of the Hiligaynon-speaking provinces of West Visayas and certain provinces of Mindanao, knowing that the West Visayan experience is also Filipino, and what is regional literature is also national literature.
