A small boy sets out to test his mettle versus the Norfolk & Western's J-class (R) 4-8-4 steam locomotive number 611 at Duluth, Georgia, on October 3 1983. The "Spirit of Roanoke" is returning to Atlanta from Toccoa, Georgia on a day-trip excursion. Hint about the outcome: the race didn't last long.
