Arctostaphylos glandulosa ssp crassifiolia, Del Mar Manzanita

Scientific Name: Arctostaphylos glandulosa ssp crassifiolia Common Name: Del Mar Manzanita or Costa Baja Manzanita This rare Southern California Native manzanita grows up to eight feet tall and six feet wide.  This manzanita is one of the fastest growing manzanitas!  It has dark red bark, pink silver leaves, and pink flower clusters that bloom in late winter through spring.   It is best to prune in the time when they are flowering to early summer.  Each flower cluster terminates the growth of a shoot causing an irregular twiggy branching habit.  It is not recommended to prune manzanitas during cool, wet winter months, this encourages fungal pathogens to spread.  You can edge in late spring or early summer.  It is a great tree for erosion control and loves slopes.
